THE ROOT CAUSE
A Manifesto on Mismatch, Cycles, and Coming Home & a Solstice Announcement
There is no Monday in nature.
No fiscal quarter. No 9-to-5. No inbox to clear before five o’clock, no notification demanding your attention at 11pm on a Tuesday, and so forth. Biologically, your body has no reason to know its Tuesday vs. Sunday.
There is only light and dark. The moon waxing and waning. The seasons turning, spring’s emergence, summer’s fullness, fall’s slow contraction, winter’s necessary dark. These are the only cycles your body actually evolved to expect. Everything else (the week, the workday, the always-on glow of a screen at midnight) is a human invention. A useful one, in many ways. Maybe. But an invention nonetheless, and one your nervous system was never consulted about.
I want to make a claim that I’ve been circling for years, in different forms, across every masterclass, every blog post, every hour spent teaching Rhythmic Movement Training:
I believe that a great deal of chronic illness, the fatigue, the pain, the hormone chaos, the anxiety that won’t resolve, the inflammation with no clear cause, all of it, is not a malfunction. It’s a mismatch.
The Body Expects Something Specific
Every system in your body, your circadian clock, your hormones, your nervous system, your mitochondria, evolved inside a very particular set of conditions. Bright light by day, true darkness by night. Movement woven throughout waking hours, not concentrated into a single gym session at 5 am or 7pm. Food eaten in rhythm with daylight, not at 11pm under a blue-lit ceiling. Seasons of exertion followed by seasons of rest. Community, physical touch, and the steady, repeated presence of other humans nearby.
This is the truth about how our physiology works. It isn’t romanticism. Robert Naviaux’s work on the Cell Danger Response describes, at the molecular level, how cells shift into a defensive, energy-conserving state when they perceive their environment as unsafe or misaligned, and how that state, if it never resolves, becomes the metabolic substrate of chronic illness. The mismatch is actually measurable, down to the mitochondria.
Iain McGilchrist, in The Matter With Things, makes a related case at a different scale: that modern life has come to privilege a narrow, mechanistic way of attending to the world, prioritizing the left brain hemisphere (the half that isolates, quantifies, and controls), at the expense of the broader, relational, context-sensing way of attending that falls under the purview of the right brain hemisphere, and that actually allows living systems to thrive. We have, in a sense, organized our entire civilization, in the last few centuries, around the wrong brain hemisphere’s priorities. Efficiency over rhythm. Optimization over relationship. Survival over ease. The clock over the cycle.
I don’t think it’s a coincidence that the body’s stress response and the mind’s narrowed attention show up together so often, in the same depleted, anxious, inflamed person. They’re the same root cause, expressed in two different registers.
What We Traded, And When
For most of human history, time was the moon, the sun, and the turning of seasons. The seven-day week is a comparatively recent invention: Babylonian in origin, formalized by Rome, spread by empires and religions that needed a shared administrative rhythm more than they needed a biologically accurate one. Mechanical clocks are only a few centuries old. Electric light is barely 150 years old. The smartphone, perhaps the single most circadian-disrupting object ever placed in a human hand, is younger than most of the adults reading this.
In the span of human existence, we have had artificial light at night, food available at any hour, and a workweek divorced from daylight for what amounts to a single, brief flicker of time. Your body did not get the memo. It is still operating on the old instructions (the ones written by light, dark, moon, and season), even while living inside an environment built almost entirely to ignore them. What our amazing bodies are actually accomplishing is a feat of extraordinary proportions, given that they’re operating at a rather dramatic deficit!!!
This is what evolutionary medicine calls mismatch disease: not that something is broken, but that the environment has changed faster than the organism could adapt. Diabetes, much of cardiovascular disease, many autoimmune conditions, and a great deal of what gets labeled “stress” or “anxiety” fit this pattern far better than the simple, linear “something is wrong with you” story most of medicine still tells.
What this Means Practically
If the root cause of an illness is mismatch, then the most powerful intervention isn’t a new supplement or a more aggressive protocol. It’s re-matching. Bringing the actual conditions of a day, a month, a year, a life, back into closer alignment with what the body has always expected.
I wrote about what it may look like to live in a way that honors the season we’re in, back in February - HERE.
This is the thread underneath everything I teach.
Morning light and evening darkness, because your circadian clock still reads light as the only reliable signal of time.
Rhythmic Movement Training, because primitive reflexes were never meant to remain unintegrated into adulthood, however common that’s become.
Hydration and structured water, because your fascia and your cells were built to run on more than tap water and willpower.
Community and cyclical gathering, because co-regulation between nervous systems is not a nicety, it’s how mammals have always steadied each other, long before any of us had a name for it.
And it’s the thread underneath a quieter shift I’ve been making in how the Wellness With Ease Circle, my Group Health Coaching Membership, itself is held. Rather than meeting by the clock — a fixed day, every single week, regardless of season or moon — the Circle now gathers around the new moon and the full moon. Not because the exact date is magic, but because choosing to organize anything around a real cycle, instead of an invented one, is itself a small act of re-matching. A weekly call is administratively convenient. A lunar rhythm is biologically legible. I would rather build something the body truly understands than something merely convenient for a calendar app.
An Invitation, Not A Prescription
It’s easy to let this whole “root-cause language” spoil into another form of pressure: one more thing to optimize, one more way to fail. I’m not enough. and so on and so forth.
That’s not what this is.
You cannot fully escape the 7-day week. You likely have a job, a school schedule, obligations that run on Gregorian time, and that’s simply the world we share right now. This isn’t a call to abandon modern life. Although some days I do feel that would be kind of nice… It’s an invitation to notice where the mismatch lives in your own days, and to close even small parts of that gap, wherever you actually can:
Step outside within the first hour of waking.
Dim the lights before bed instead of flooding your evening with the same light your retinas would receive in the middle of the day.
Move your body in small, frequent ways rather than saving all of it for one weekly hour.
Let a season ask something different of you than the one before it did.
Gather with other people, in person or even just by voice, regularly enough that your nervous system remembers it isn’t facing the world alone.
None of these habit changes alone fix everything. But each one is a small, real act of coming back into rhythm with something older and steadier than any calendar we’ve invented. It’s a beautiful manifestation of the power of compound interest as applied to biology (as I wrote about back in January). I believe, with the same conviction that runs through every masterclass and every page of this work, that this returning is not a luxury. It is close to the root of healing itself.
There is no Monday in nature. There is only light, and dark, and the long, patient turning of the world. We were built for that rhythm. It’s still there, waiting, whenever we’re ready to come back to it.
Wellness With EASE Circle
If this resonates, the Wellness With EASE Circle is where I practice all of it, out loud, with other people doing the same: guided movement, a slow return to rhythm instead of routine, and now, calls held by the moon instead of the clock.
This solstice, the Circle also got a great deal richer. It now also includes:
My brand new course The Path Back to EASE - a four-part journey back to what your nervous system already knows. This self-paced course combines masterclasses, written lessons, and quiet reflection practices, each one tracing a step on the path: Embody, Appreciate, Soothe, Elevate.
By the end, you’ll have a simple, repeatable rhythm for returning to ease, again and again.
A FULLY SEARCHABLE Masterclass Archive - 22 recordings and counting, over 28 hours of teaching. A $660 value on its own.
The Becoming Workbook - 88 pages of guided practices and reflection, organized to come along side you on your journey through EASE. Normally $24. Downloadable as a PDF at no extra charge.
Altogether, that’s nearly $800 in resources — included in your $97/month membership, with nothing new to purchase and nothing extra to set up.
A Founding Season
I’m also marking this moment with something new: a Founding Season.
From today, the solstice, through the fall equinox on September 22nd, anyone who joins the Wellness With EASE Circle locks in a founding rate of $67/month, for as long as they remain a member. After the equinox, the membership opens at its regular rate of $97/month.
This felt right for the same reason everything else here does: the solstice and equinox are real thresholds, not arbitrary dates on a calendar. A season of light, narrowing toward a season of balance. If you join somewhere inside that arc, your rate stays with you for the entirety of your time here.
If you join during this Founding Season, your rate locks in at $67/mo. for as long as you stay.
Of all the reasons out there to join, the most important is because healing was never meant to happen alone, and there’s a circle of incredible humans here, tuning together, who would love for you to join them.
JOIN TODAY!

Amanda

I've been realizing that every mismatch I've intentionally tolerated — and every mismatch my living system had to create or maintain in order to survive — seems to have carried a small, accumulating cost. And stepping away from those has led to surprising gains.
Thank you for writing this, A! I've been waiting for you to put it down in one place, and now that you have, I can't wait to watch where it carries the practice. Something is shifting, and it's going to be good.
I have been learning over the last few years that so much of what we call being broken is just a body faithfully running old instructions inside a world built to ignore them. Once you see it that way, the whole hunt for what's wrong runs backward. We go after the symptom like it broke in through a window. But most of the time the symptom isn't the intruder. It's the report.
That's the part that undoes the shame, isn't it? A body running the right program in the wrong world isn't failing. It's being faithful. So the work was never to fix it. It's to hand it back something it recognizes and get out of the way while it finishes what it already knew how to do. And oh is that a hard one for the programmed world to swallow! Ahh! So exciting to know and continue to learn!
Grateful for you and excited for what is to come! 💜
